Winner of three Tony Awards, three Outer Critic’s Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards, and two Obie Awards, Urinetown is an earnest tale of love, greed, and revolution. The show is set in a town plagued by a 20-year drought, where water has become so scarce that private toilets have become unthinkable. At the mercy of a single dominating corporation who maintains a monopoly on the town’s public amenities, the destitute citizens must pay towering taxes and fines to carry out their most private and basic of needs. Out of the mass of the pitiable, a hero rises to lead his fellow citizens against the tyrannical regime. Drawing from West Side Story, Chicago, and Les Misérables among others, the show irreverently pays witty homage to the great American musical theatre tradition. Hilariously funny and touchingly honest, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective of one of America’s greatest art forms.

For the tenth year in a row, Riverdale High School students claimed the top team prize at the 45th Annual CH2M-Hill/Oregon State University (OSU) College of Engineering model bridge contest. Riverdale students Cole Bemis and Kate Hollingshead (pictured above with their physics teacher, Mark Wechter) won first and second spots respectively enabling them to travel to Chicago, Illinois Saturday, May 10th to vie for international honors.
The object of this contest is to see who can design, construct and test the most efficient bridge within the specifications. Model bridges are intended to be simplified versions of real-world bridges, which are designed to accept a load in any position and permit the load to travel across the entire bridge.
The competition pitted high school students from across the state against each other to see who could make the most efficient balsa wood bridge. Efficiency was determined by dividing the total weight that the bridge held by the weight of the bridge.
After winning the league's baritone division in March, Yonah Barany went on to compete at the state championships this past Saturday May 3rd. Fifteen other Baritones qualified for state, and a panel of three judges put Yonah in first place, where he earned the title of 2014 State Champion Baritone. He sang two pieces- Danse Macabre by Camille Saint-Saens and When the Air Turns To Summer from the Opera "The Old Maid and the Thief" by Gian Carlo Menotti.
Last year he took 4th place as a Junior.
Yonah has been an active member of the Riverdale High School choir and theater. Outside of school he is a member of the Pacific Youth Choir's Chamber Choir, and with this group has performed with the Steven Petronio Dance Company, Thomas Lauderdale (Pink Martini) and The Oregon Symphony.
Next year he will attend Lawrence University where he will double major in music and mathematics.
Riverdale High School students Cole Bemis and Kate Hollingshead competed in the International Bridge Building Competition Saturday, May10th in Chicago, Illinois. This is the eleventh (11th) consecutive year that Riverdale students have represented Oregon in International competition, and the third time in the last six years that a Riverdale High School student has taken first place at this competition.
Fifty-eight contestants from over 25 states and Indonesia competed. Cole's bridge had a mass of 9.69 grams and held 49 kilograms, holding over 5,057 times its own weight, placing first, and Kate took 13th place. Congrats to both of them!
The competition is intended to promote interest in engineering and provides an opportunity for high school teachers to introduce the concepts of design and testing of engineering structures to their students. All Riverdale sophomores complete bridges as part of Riverdale science teacher Mark Wechter’s physics curriculum.
They will deliver inspirational stories living up to TED’s motto, "Ideas Worth Spreading." Guided by the theme “Limitless,” speakers will fuel and inspire new ideas around the “limitless” potential of youth. Thanks to the University of Oregon’s generous support, the event will take place in the White Stag Block in Downtown Portland. From 9:00 a.m. when the doors open to 3:00 p.m. when the event ends, TEDxYouth@Portland welcomes you to experience messages from nine speakers and three performers.
RHS's Collin Styring speaker - TEDxYouth Inspired by his service work for the Oregon Food Bank and solar energy installations near the family farm, eighteen year-old Collin Styring founded Green Food Nation. This 501(c)(3) installs renewable energy devices on food banks so more money can be spent feeding those in need. He raised funds to build a proof of concept installation at the Yamhill County Action Project. Today, each kilowatt on the meter buys two meals for hungry people. |
RHS's Oscar Tzintzun speaker - TEDxYouth Born in Michoacan, Mexico, Oscar immigrated to the US at age four. He initially struggled to integrate himself into American culture. While this did not stop him from being a happy child, he searched for his voice and found it with Momentum Alliance. There, he collaborated with like-minded peers to empower himself and other youth to become social activists. Today, he plays an active role in the organization and advocates for immigrant rights as well as reproductive and minority justice. |

In November 2012, Lincoln High School selected a delegation of students, including Marty Berger, Kendra Hong and McKinley Rodriguez, to visit Doha, Qatar, as part of a trip courtesy of Qatar Foundation International (QFI). While there, the students attended TEDxYouth@Doha. After their initial exposure to a TEDxYouth event, Marty, Kendra, and McKinley considered hosting one at home. They applied for a grant from QFI and were fortunate enough to receive it.
Early in 2014, TEDxPortland took the students under its wing, offering mentorship and resources. It was then that TEDxYouth@Portland formed fully. As they searched for speakers, they encountered youth who have flourished in their communities through education, evolution, and growth. That’s why the TEDxYouth@Portland theme for 2014 is “Limitless,” as inspired by the speakers
The speakers include Theodore Ashford, Kirsten Calverley, Sierra Hosea, Jacob Johnson, Brenda Ramirez, Collin Styring, Bella Trent, Oscar Tzintzun and Lizzy Zhao. Performers are Leila Hawana, Roopa Ramanujam, and the Rose City Quintet.

Open from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Riverdale Grade School Commons
Pick up your back to school information and registration packet, which will include teacher assignment grades K-4. Additionally, students entering grades 7-8 will receive an elective selection form. It is very important that this is returned on the first day of school. We will have a representative from the bus company to answer questions about school routes and provide information. Rob Pridemore, Athletic Director, will also be here to answer any sports related questions.
We are excited to report the addition of a new full time technology teaching position at Riverdale High School. Adam McLain will be joining us this year which will allow us to provide new technology classes starting first trimester. Please click the link below to view the new course offerings and students should complete and submit the survey ASAP if they are interested in taking one of the courses first trimester. More news to come regarding the upcoming school year.
Fall portraits will be taken soon -- and we know it's only one of the many things you have going on right now -- so in an effort to help streamline things for you, this message serves as a gentle reminder of the 5 W's of Picture Day.
WHO: Riverdale Grade School Students
WHAT: School Picture Day 2014
WHERE: Riverdale Grade School Campus
WHEN: September 10th
WHY: This photo will appear on your student's ID card, in the yearbook, and can be a lovely keepsake for friends and family. Fall portraits are also known to be used in The Lake Oswego Review and other publications (if permission is granted).
HOW: To PREORDER with a credit or debit card, CLICK HERE, print the receipt, and have your student hand it to the photographer on Picture Day.
For cash or check payments, simply pick up an order form from the school office or on location on Picture Day -- and have your student bring it to the photographer. Note that we are unable to make change onsite.
Historically, the building can get hot & humid, and many students have sports activities that day as well, so please have a clean, dry shirt to be photographed in. To further enhance the value of your investment, you may wish to consult the "Looking Your Best" section of our order form for tips & tricks (i.e. tank tops, sports shirts, and logos generally do not photograph well; neither do bare arms and underarms). All students will be photographed for ID cards, the yearbook, and school records, so please dress accordingly.
If you have any questions or encounter any difficulty with the online preordering process, contact us at Smile@AisAPhotography.com or 503-636-9650 and we will be happy to help. Thank you very much. We love working with the Lake Oswego/Dunthorpe/SW Portland community -- where we have also lived & worked for over 30 years.
