Riverdale High School New Graduate Gets Taste of the Real World
Katherine Donaldson, class of 2008, named a 2016 ALA Emerging Leader

Katherine Donaldson, Riverdale High School class of 2008, has been named a 2016 Emerging Leader by the American Library Association. This leadership development program selects no more than 50 newer library workers each year to work in small groups on a 6-month project, while networking, gaining insight into ALA structure and having the opportunity to support librarianship in a leadership capacity. Katherine, who is the librarian-in-residence at Loyola-Marymont/LA, was among a handful of participants to be sponsored by an ALA unit, subsidizing her attendance to the national conferences. Yonah Barany, class of 2014, earned first place at state music competition
First place at state music competition
Yonah Barany, Riverdale High School class of 2014, earned first-place honors in the sophomore men's division at the recent Wisconsin chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition. He is currently a sophomore at Lawrence University. The auditions drew nearly 400 singers from around the state to compete in 22 separate divisions grouped by gender and level. Depending upon the category, NATS competitors are required to sing two, three or four classical pieces from different time periods with at least one selection sung in a foreign language. Read more.
Eleanor Van Buren, class of 2013, talks college sports and embassy internship
Athletes among us
Eleanor Van Buren, Riverdale High School class of 2013, is featured in an Oberlin College Athletic Department video. She is a Comparative Literature major, plays basketball, throws discus and has also been writing and performing songs on campus. Eleanor also completed an internship with the Department of State, spending 12 weeks in the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa, Canada, learning the ins and outs of diplomacy and how an embassy functions. While there, she reached out to the University of Ottawa women’s basketball team and joined with them in what she refers to as “fun summer workouts together.”

Yonah Barany performs in university production of ‘The Beggar's Opera’
Yonah Barany, class of 2014, performed in Lawrence University's recent production of John Gay's "The Beggar's Opera," a biting satire on English government and society. Barany portrayed the central role of Lockit, the corrupt jailer of Newgate Prison. He is currently a sophomore at Lawrence University in Wisconsin.
Written 1728 as an English counter-response to 18th-century Italian opera, "The Beggar's Opera" follows the plight of Peachum, thief-taker and informer, who conspires to send dashing and promiscuous highwayman Macheath to the gallows after Macheath has secretly married Peachum's daughter.

Scott Van Bergen (class of 2010) shows sculpture in PSU show
Our high school art teacher, David Schell, recently ran into alumnus Scott Van Bergen, class of 2010, at an art opening. Scott is thriving as a sculpture major at Portland State University, and is about to finish is BFA. He is currently featured in a group art show on the PSU campus.
As Mr. Schell explains of the photos below, “Scott's work is held together by tension. The engine block acts as a weight that keeps the wood in place. He's become a fan of Richard Serra's work – a great artist for any young person to look up to!”

Alumni panel discusses transition to college and career on May 31
The high school is excited to welcome a panel of alumni at 4 p.m., Tuesday, May 31.
The group will discuss the transition from high school to college, success in college and the transition from college into the job market. Alternatives to college will also be discussed. The alumni are graduates from 2005 to 2015.
All students and parents are welcome.
Juniors and seniors are strongly encouraged to attend.
