Riverdale selects Terry P. Brandon as next Superintendent

Concluding its search for a superintendent to succeed Interim Superintendent Mike Taylor whose term ends June 30, 2013, the Riverdale School District Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Terry P. Brandon has been selected as the district's next Superintendent effective July 1, 2013. Brandon and the Board are working on the terms of a tentative agreement that will be formalized at a public meeting. The board anticipates making the official offer for the position at its next board meeting.

“For our search we had an impressive field of 35 candidates from all across the country. We were amazed at the quality of candidates from both very large and small school districts. Many had superintendent experience and others were ready for their first position as superintendent. However, Terry Brandon emerged from the field as the right choice to be our next Superintendent,” Board Chair Mike Gunter said. “After the initial interview, the more we got to know Terry; he just seemed to be the right person for the job.” The school board reviewed the candidate applications with the assistance of a 15 member screening committee including administrators, staff, and community. With help from some of the screeners, the board conducted a rigorous round of initial interviews with several candidates, then, investigated selected candidates' backgrounds and references.   All those interviewed during the reference checks had high praise for Brandon’s knowledge about education, his organizational skills and his ability to build relationships. After the background checks, the Board invited both finalists for a "day in the district" at Riverdale followed by a second interview with the Board.

Brandon distinguished himself in the field of applicants by demonstrating a record of proven leadership and success.   Before taking the position as Executive Director of Human Resources at Marysville School District in Marysville, Washington where he has worked for the last 7 years, he was the interim Executive Director of Elementary Education for a year at Mukilteo School District with 12,000 students. Earlier, Brandon was Superintendent at Deer Park School District (2,500 students) for 5 years and Pomeroy School District (305 students) for 4 years both in Washington. His teaching experience is in industrial education and math. Brandon is the current President of WASA (Washington Association of School Administrators) Region 109 and also past President of the Employee Relations and Negotiations Network (ERNN).   He has served as President or Chair of numerous other education groups during his time as an educator.   For community service he is Chair of the Marysville chapter of Rotary International. Brandon has a Masters of Arts in Education from Eastern Washington University with curriculum and instruction as his major. His bachelor’s degree in education is also from Eastern Washington University.

“When my wife and I visited the students, staff and community at Riverdale, we just felt connected. I look forward to building lasting relationships as we move the school district forward. ” Brandon said. “I believe we have a tremendous opportunity and responsibility to achieve something special for Riverdale students and we have the resources and community support to make it happen. I'm excited to be the next superintendent for Riverdale."

Riverdale School District Selects Joanna Marie Tobin as New Grade School Principal

Riverdale School District is pleased to announce the selection of the new Riverdale Grade School Principal, Joanna Marie Tobin.  Ms. Tobin will succeed Interim Principal Lisa Becker, whose term ends June 30, 2013.

Tobin was selected through process that included input from parents, faculty and staff, according to Board Chair Michael Gunter.  The District received 27 applications for the position.  After the screening committee (made up of administrators, faculty and staff) reviewed all of the applications, nine (9) candidates were interviewed by a team of administrators, faculty, staff, and parents.  Four finalists participated in a daylong site visit interview. It was a difficult decision given the strong pool of applicants. However, Tobin emerged as a great fit for Riverdale, based on her energy, enthusiasm, and experience in administration, establishing and maintaining Multidisciplinary Teams, Professional Learning Communities, Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, Standards Based Assessment/Proficiency-Based Grading, Implementation of the Common Core State Standards and Response to Intervention.  Ms. Tobin will be a great complement to the existing administrative team.

Joanna Tobin has a background in teaching, counseling, coaching and administration.  She studied German at Linfield College, where she was also a member of the track team. She received her Master of Education in School Counseling and completed the Administrative Licensure Program, both at Lewis and Clark College.  For the last five years she has been the Principal of St. Helens Middle School.

Her interest in Riverdale was sparked during her time at Lewis and Clark College; and she says that the K-8 grade school, small K-12 district and vast community involvement reminded her of her experience as an exchange student at Gymnasium Neureut in Germany.  “During my day-long site visit I was impressed with the teachers’ approach to facilitating student engagement and the amazing family involvement. The Riverdale community has greeted me with such kindness – I look forward to the exciting work we have to do together”, said Tobin.

Urinetown, RHS Drama's Winter Musical

Winner of three Tony Awards, three Outer Critic’s Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards, and two Obie Awards, Urinetown is an earnest tale of love, greed, and revolution. The show is set in a town plagued by a 20-year drought, where water has become so scarce that private toilets have become unthinkable. At the mercy of a single dominating corporation who maintains a monopoly on the town’s public amenities, the destitute citizens must pay towering taxes and fines to carry out their most private and basic of needs. Out of the mass of the pitiable, a hero rises to lead his fellow citizens against the tyrannical regime. Drawing from West Side Story, Chicago, and Les Misérables among others, the show irreverently pays witty homage to the great American musical theatre tradition. Hilariously funny and touchingly honest, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective of one of America’s greatest art forms.

MoveOn.org officials chose Riverdale High School junior Megan Larkin to helm a campaign against natural gas and oil fracking, rallying people to sign a petition she'll be submitting to Oregen legislators.  Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, combines horizontal drilling techniques and massive injections of sand and chemical-laced water to loosen shale and release oil and natural gas.
